Pattern Definition

Definition

Adding products/services not selected by the consumer to the shopping cart, or automatically renewing a purchase without explicit consent.

Psychological mechanism

Default bias and loss aversion. Removing an added (even free) product is perceived as giving up a benefit. Users may also simply fail to notice the addition due to cognitive laziness.

Consumer impact

  • Consumer perception: High harm, violates economic interests. Often goes unnoticed until post-purchase.
  • Measured impact: Unquantified frequency in OSINT, but highly harmful when executed.
  • Vulnerable demographics: Based on qualitative report conclusions.

Detection Signals

  • On-page evidence: After adding one product, another (free or paid) item unexpectedly appears in the cart.

Evidence (Code examples)

Additional products are injected into the browser's local storage.

Regulatory Angle

Verification of inventory logic. Direct violation of explicit consent rules for additional payments (Article 22 of the Consumer Rights Directive).
